The Shaper: A Challenge

To follow up on class discussion: Grendel perceives the Shaper as deceitful and clearly his stories about Hrothgar are one-sided, but in what way does the Shaper create something positive despite his "lies"? Why is Grendel so moved by him?

The Shaper allows the Danes to have something to value in life. He inspires the Danes to aspire for greatness in their lives and he gives them something to believe in. Grendel is so moved by him because of his power to persuade people to believe in what he is saying and the grace in which he does so.

The Shaper is able to create something positive with his stories. In his stories he sings of the Danes, portraying them as heroic and brave. His stories do not tell of the crude Dane past. These stories, though at times false, allow the Danes to construct values that are warm and comforting. The stories also show love and beauty which make the Danes seek a purpose in their life. Grendel is moved by him because he gives the Danes hope and shows that they can move beyond their past to become something better. Though Grendel knows the stories aren't true, the Shaper tells them in a way that can persuade people to believe him.

The Shaper creates something positive by giving the Danes a positive outlook on their lives. He allows them to think that they all have a meaning in their life and that they should try to find it. He makes the Danes think that they and the world have a purpose. Even though he is full of "lies", the things that he says gives the Danes a meaning in their lives. Grendel is moved by him because he has a completely different outlook on life and on humans than the Dragon does. It is interesting to him and like the Danes, The Shaper give Grendel a positive outlook on life.

The shaper shows Grendel the power of words as well as how easily someone can persuade people to believe what he wants. He also gives Hrothgar's people something to believe in by giving them false hope relating to Grendel.

The Shaper gives the Danes the power to change the perception on how they view themselves. He makes them want to be something better than what they already are through his stories and comforting words. Grengel is so moved by the Shaper because of his ability to change people's opinions and believe anything he says, even if it is not the truth. The Shaper also has such a different outlook on life than the dragon and gives Grendel more strength.

The Shaper is able to give the Danes hope and something positive to think about. He tells great stories of heroes and beauty, and shows that even in the harsh world they live in their is still good things surounding them. Even though he does this by altering the truth and lieing, he is still doing the community a service by giving them something to believe in and look forward to.

The Shaper creates something positive in his "lies" by changing the way the Danes view the world in which they live. His stories allow for them to see a greater meaning in life rather than to view life nihilistically as the dragon does. He also portrays the Danes as brave and heroic people in his stories. These stories create a solid base of values for the Danes' society thus being a positive influence in their lives. Grendel is so moved by the Shaper's stories because of his power of persuasion and because he wishes that he has something greater to believe in as the Danes do.

The Shaper is good even though he lies because he gives the people hope in the dark times that they live in. He is there to inspire the people to try and do good things and be good citizens so that everyone can live in harmony. Grendel is moved by him because he can convince people that there is good in thier society and that there is a reason to obey the king.

i think that Grendel is so moved by the Sharper BECAUSE of his lies. the way people follow him and believe him amazes Grendel. He is not drawn away from the Sharper because of his lies, if anything he is more drawn to the Sharper because of them

Despite his "lies," the Shaper provides the Danes with hope and passion. He can create stories that can make the group quiet and reflective, or he can get them fired up by telling stories about great victories and battles. I think that Grendel is moved by the Shaper because of the power of persuasion that he has over the Danes. By creating stories, he has the ability to alter their emotions.
